Merchandising / Conversion Architecture
From product grid to guided shopping experience
The Challenge
The content was right. The path through it wasn't. A visitor landed on a grid of 20+ SKUs with no way to signal what kind of purchase they were actually making — an everyday ritual candle, a gift, or a sculptural statement piece for a room. Scented candles (fragrance, ritual) and sculptural pieces (décor, gifting) are different purchase motivations dressed up as the same shopping flow.
Overview
Scentual Luxe came in with a live, functional Shopify store — good photography, a real catalogue, a founder story, genuine trust signals. Nothing was broken. But the homepage had no shape, and two genuinely different product lines were flattened into one undifferentiated scroll. This case study covers restructuring that path without touching what already worked.
A Decision-First Homepage
Replaced the "here's everything, good luck" opener with an intent router — everyday calm, a gift, or a statement piece — so visitors self-select before browsing, instead of parsing 20+ SKUs cold. That one decision reframes the rest of the page from a scroll into a guided path.
Two Collections, Two Experiences
Scented and Sculptural are different purchase motivations dressed up as the same shopping flow. They got distinct visual treatments and separated sections instead of one long undifferentiated scroll, so each collection reads as its own considered space rather than more of the same grid.
Decision Support Over Product Names
Added mood tags and filters to the scent grid, so "which one is for me" doesn't depend on guessing what a name like "Exotic Woods" actually smells like. A small addition that removes a real point of hesitation right before a purchase decision.
Page Balance
The sculptural range (12 pieces) would have visually dwarfed the scented range (8) if shown in full. It now loads six at a time with a "view all" expand, so the page reads at a consistent pace instead of front-loading one collection over the other.
Currency and Pricing Clarity
Standardized every price to symbol plus ISO code — R350.00 ZAR — since a bare "R" is genuinely ambiguous internationally (it's also the Brazilian Real symbol). Added an optional display-currency switcher (ZAR/USD/EUR/GBP, static approximate rates, clearly labeled) so international visitors aren't doing mental math mid-decision.
What Was Deliberately Not Done
No unnecessary rebuild — the content, photography, and brand voice that already worked stayed untouched. No unproven claims — this was pitched to the client as a UX-principles argument (reduced decision friction, clearer merchandising), not an A/B-tested conversion guarantee, because there's no live-traffic data to back a guarantee with, and saying otherwise would be a promise made without evidence. No nav bloat — Journal and Watch sections were only added as structural placeholders after confirming with the client there was a real content plan, with an explicit flag that shipping them empty long-term would hurt SEO more than help it.
QA, Verified Not Assumed
Two real bugs were caught and fixed before delivery — not by re-reading the code, but by actually rendering the site in a browser at multiple viewport widths and both light/dark themes: a mobile-menu regression introduced by an earlier breakpoint change, and a dark-mode contrast bug where a new UI element was invisible against its own background. Both were verified fixed with before/after screenshots, not just assumed fixed from reading the code.
Why This Works
Intent router replaces a cold 20+ SKU grid as the homepage opener
Scented and Sculptural collections given distinct visual spaces, not one long scroll
Mood tags and filters added so scent choice doesn't depend on guessing from a product name
Every price standardized to symbol + ISO code, with an optional currency switcher
Lazy-loaded below-the-fold images, preloaded hero, fixed font preconnects, one asset recompressed 173KB → 64KB
Two real bugs caught and verified fixed via actual browser rendering, not assumed from code
Brand Applications
What Changed?
Before
After
Same trust, same content, restructured so a visitor moves through it with more confidence and less scrolling — and pitched honestly, without claiming conversion numbers nobody has yet.
