Instagram Is Not Your Website
You don't own your following. You rent it, on someone else's terms.
Here's a fact most businesses only learn the hard way: you do not own your Instagram followers, your WhatsApp broadcast list, or your TikTok reach. You're renting attention on infrastructure you don't control.
That arrangement works fine until it doesn't. An account gets flagged and locked pending a review that takes three weeks. A platform changes its algorithm and your reach drops by half overnight, for no reason you did anything differently. None of this is hypothetical. It happens to real businesses, regularly, and there's no appeal process that moves at the speed your business needs it to.
A website doesn't have this problem, because nobody else's policy decides whether it's online. You pay for hosting, you own the domain, and the only thing that determines whether your storefront is open is you.
The smart version of this isn't choosing one over the other. It's using social media for what it's actually good at (discovery, reach, personality) while building the one asset that isn't rented from anyone. Own your online presence. Rent the rest.
